Description
Background:
Glial maturation factor-beta (GMF-beta) is isolated from brain tissues.1The expression of GMF-beta is largely limited to the brain2, especially glial cells and some neurons.3 GMF-beta is involved in the phenotypic differentiation of glial cells and neurons. It is expressed in the cytosol and on the cell surface of astrocytes.4,5 It is not secreted and presumably acts at short distances involving cell-to-cell interactions with target cells expressing a receptor. It is suggested that induction of GMF-beta expression in the kidney may play a key role in renal disease progression caused by proteinuria.
