Description
Background:
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH or corticotrophin) is a polypeptide tropic hormone produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It is also produced by cells of immune system (T cells, B cells and macrophages). It is an important component of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and is often produced in response to biological stress. Its principal effects are increased production of androgens and cortisol from the adrenal cortex. ACTH may be considered as a useful adjunctive therapy in patients with intractable generalized seizures.1
