Background
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a gram-negative bacterium that primarily infects the mucous membranes of the urogenital tract, rectum, and pharynx. The bacterium is an obligate human pathogen that is transmitted through unprotected sexual contact with an infected person, including vaginal, anal, or oral sex. The bacterium has developed resistance to several frontline antibiotic treatments which makes the treatment of gonorrhea a challenge.
