Background

Pigment Epithelium-Derived Factor (PEDF) is a 50 kDa glycoprotein member of the serpin family known for its multifunctional properties, including neurotrophic, anti-angiogenic, and anti-tumor activities. Unlike inhibitory serpins, PEDF does not inhibit proteases but exerts its effects by inducing apoptosis in proliferating endothelial cells, thus suppressing angiogenesis. PEDF also antagonizes angiogenic factors such as VEGF and FGF-2, contributing to its anti-angiogenic role. Its neuroprotective function is mediated by preventing apoptosis in neurons caused by oxidative stress and neurotoxins. PEDF exerts its biological activities through a high-affinity interaction with its unique cell surface receptor, PEDF-R, which possesses phospholipase activity. This receptor-mediated signaling is key for PEDF's diverse roles, including inhibition of tumor growth and vascular-related neurodegenerative diseases like age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). The broad therapeutic potential of PEDF extends to various angiogenesis-dependent conditions, including cancer.

Predicted Molecular Mass
The molecular weight of Recombinant Human PEDF is Mr 44.5 kDa.
Formulation
The protein was 0.2 µm filtered and lyophilized from PBS.
Reconstitution
For reconstitution, it is advised to use sterile high-purity water (18MΩ-cm) with the lyophilized protein at a concentration of at least 100µg/ml. Subsequent dilutions into other aqueous solutions can be performed after this initial step.
Storage and Stability
The lyophilized protein should be stored desiccated at -20°C. The reconstituted protein can be stored for at least one week at 4°C. For long-term storage of the reconstituted protein, aliquot into working volumes and store at -20°C in a manual defrost freezer. Avoid Repeated Freeze Thaw Cycles.
