Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive coccus frequently found in the nose, respiratory tract, and on skin. It is often positive for catalase and nitrate reduction. Although S. aureus is not always pathogenic, it is a common cause of skin infections such as abscesses, respiratory infections such as sinusitis, and food poisoning. Pathogenic strains often promote infections by producing potent protein toxins, and expressing cell-surface proteins that bind and inactivate antibodies. The emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus such as methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is a worldwide problem in clinical medicine.

The Challenge of MRSA and Bacterial Pathogenesis

The clinical and economic impact of S. aureus has been drastically compounded by the rapid emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains, most notably Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The pervasive spread of both healthcare-associated (HA-MRSA) and community-associated (CA-MRSA) infections has elevated this pathogen to a top priority in infectious disease research.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms of S. aureus pathogenesis is critical for ongoing microbiological studies. The bacteria expertly evade host immune responses by utilizing a complex arsenal of virulence factors, including Protein A, hemolysins, superantigens, and enterotoxins. Research targeting these mechanisms is fundamental to the development of novel therapeutics, next-generation vaccines, and rapid diagnostic screening tools.

These antibodies recognize peptidoglycan of Staph. aureus, Protein A-negative Staph. aureus, and Staph. epidermidis. They do not cross-react with Streptococcus sp., Mycoplasma sp., or Corynebacteria sp.
