BackgroundChromogranin A (CHGA) is a member of the neuroendocrine secretory protein family located in secretory vesicles of neurons and endocrine cells. CHGA is a precursor to three biologically active peptides: vasostatin, pancreastatin, and parastatin. These peptides function as autocrine or paracrine negative modulators of the neuroendocrine system. Other peptides including chromostatin, betagranin, WE-14 and GE-25 are also derived from full-length CHGA. CHGA has numerous biological activities including antifungal and antimicrobial action, modulation of cell adhesion, and inhibition of parathyroid hormone secretion.
