Description

Description

Specificity
These antibodies recognize an antigen on the outer envelope of canine distemper virus.
Background
Canine distemper virus (CDV) is an enveloped, non-segmented, single-stranded RNA virus and is a member of the morbillivirus family (related to measles virus). Despite widespread use of vaccination, distemper continues to be a problem with outbreaks occurring in dogs as well as in other species, such as seals and lions. CDV in dogs is generally transmitted as an aerosol infection to the upper respiratory tract; primary virus replication takes place in lymphoid tissues resulting in severe immunosuppression . Approximately 10 days post- infection, CDV spreads from sites of primary infection to various epithelial tissues and the central nervous system, the latter leading to the most serious complications of CDV infection. Neurological signs often occur in the absence of systemic signs.
