DescriptionDescriptionSpecificity These antibodies recognize CYFRA21-1. Background CYFRA 21–1 is a fragment of cytokeratin 19 (CK19). CK19 is expressed in the unstratified or pseudostratified epithelium lining the bronchial tree, and overexpression of CK19 has been detected in many lung cancer tissue specimens. Accelerated CK19 degradation occurs in neoplastically transformed epithelial cells as a result of increased protease activity of caspase-3 (a regulator of the apoptosis cascade), and fragments, including CYFRA21-1, are released into the blood. Measurement of levels of serum CYFRA 21–1 is a useful and highly specific auxiliary test for diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) as well as for diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung. Function Involved in the organization of myofibers. Together with KRT8, helps to link the contractile apparatus to dystrophin at the costameres of striated muscle. {PubMed:16000376}.
