DescriptionDescriptionSpecificity These antibodies recognize different epitopes of human α-fetoprotein and do not cross-react with human albumin. Background Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the AFP gene. It is the most abundant serum protein found in the human fetus and appears to be the fetal analog of serum albumin. In human adults, levels of serum APF are often elevated in cases of hepatocellular carcinoma and is used as a biomarker of that disease. Function Binds copper, nickel, and fatty acids as well as, and bilirubin less well than, serum albumin. Only a small percentage (less than 2%) of the human AFP shows estrogen-binding properties.
