Description

Description

Specificity
SAIC-25B-112 H1/L1 activity is directed against human galectin-1 (LGALS1) peptide sequence SFVLNLGK.
CPTC Clone ID

Background
Galectins are involved in a wide range of physiological processes, including pre-mRNA splicing, cell cycle progression, cell growth, apoptosis, pathogen recognition, antigen processing, leukocyte trafficking, and immune activation and suppression1. Galectins primarily function by binding to the outermost group of carbohydrates on a glycoprotein or glycolipid oligosaccharide. However, in apoptosis, galectins function via protein-protein interaction. Galectins are often highly expressed at sites of inflammation and in the tumor microenvironment. LGALS1 encodes galectin-1, one of about 11 human galectins.

In normal cellular physiology, galectin-1 plays roles in cell growth, migration, adhesion, apoptosis, inflammation, immune response (including infection, transplantation, and autoimmunity), angiogenesis, axonal regeneration, nervous system development, immune tolerance in early pregnancy, and muscle differentiation1. Additionally, intracellular galectin-1 functions as a splicing factor and is involved in intracellular signaling, whereas extracellular galectin-1 facilitates interactions between cells and other cells and/or the extracellular matrix. In pathological processes, galectin-1 is involved in tumor progression and evasion of cancer immune surveillance. Galectin-1 is of interest as a potential biomarker for cancer diagnosis and prognosis and as a target of cancer therapeutics2.

SAIC-25B-112 H1/L1 was generated in rabbit for use in immuno-MRM assays using a synthetic peptide derived from human LGALS1, SFVLNLGK3. SAIC-25B-112 H1/L1 can also detect LGALS1 by indirect ELISA4. SAIC-25B-112 H1/L1 does not detect LGALS1 by immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, or Western blotting.

Antigen Distribution
Galectin-1 is expressed in a wide range of tissues and cell types and has broad localization to the nucleus, cytoplasm, cell surface, and extracellular space. Galectin 1 can also be secreted across the plasma membrane using an unconventional protein secretion pathway.
