Description

Description

Specificity
This antibody recognizes an epitope between Asp562 and Gln795 of H. pylori Cag A protein.
Background
Helicobacter pylori, first associated with peptic ulcer disease, is now also associated with gastric cancer. Investigations by Backert and Blaser of H.pylori genes and antigens identified the 128kDa CagA protein (product of the cagA gene) as a protein associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer. During infection, CagA localizes to the host plasma membrane and undergoes tyrosine phosphorylation. Subsequently, the various forms of CagA interact with >25 host signaling factors promoting proinflammatory, proliferative, cell cycle–related, and antiapoptotic gene alterations. Alterations in cellular growth and of epithelial integrity by CagA can trigger precancerous alterations in the stomach, which is one explanation for the high frequency of gastric cancer in patients carrying CagA+H. pylori.
